About the Politics & Civic Life category

Discussing how distinct societies are governed through political systems, public life, and civic identity.

Politics & Civic Life is for exploring governance, political ideologies and institutions, and civil society, and seeing how they function around the world. It includes both historical and contemporary analysis, emphasizing how ordinary people relate to the authorities of a given land.

Unlike Shared Histories, which is grounded in pure history, Politics & Civic Life centers on political structures and experiences. It is furthermore distinct from Cultural Memory since that focuses on more emotional or cultural legacies.

Discussions here are open-ended; they may include political theory, governance comparisons, election systems, public protest, authoritarianism, civil discourse norms, and more. Both seriously researched and more anecdotal insights are welcome, so long as they are thoughtful and respectful.

The purpose of this category is to, in part, try to aim for political dialogue beyond mere “hot takes” on current events.
